West Nile Virus in Custer County


Vector: infected mosquito (not human-to-human)


Protective measures:

• Wear long sleeves/pants during evening/early morning.

• Use Deet-containing mosquito spray on all exposed skin surfaces.

• 1 tablespoon of cooking oil onto any standing water (troughs, ponds).

Symptoms of human infection: Usually asymptomatic (no symptoms)

1 in 5 can develop serious illness (encephalopathy): High fever, headache, neck

stiffness, coma, stupor, tremors, convulsions, vision loss, numbness,

paralysis.
